Palm Springs

12.14.07 - 12.17.07

Dylan and I spent a weekend in Palm Springs, and for the first time visited the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. This is the lower station.

About halfway up, you pass the other tram car, of course.

Dylan holds on for dear life in the tram car, which rotates the entire trip.

Bratislava is a city of contrasts: Soviet-era brutalism interspersed with Pacific-Rim-style steel and glass.

The Soviet masterpiece, New Bridge, looms over the river waterfront.

The Soviet-built National Gallery is now smothered in good ol' capitalism.

A monument on the edge of the old city.

The Slovakia National Opera house in Old Town.

Old Town is sprinkled with new statues. Schoner Naci tips a hat at the pretty ladies passing by.

Cardiff, Wales

12.10.07 - 12.13.07

Arriving in Cardiff on Saturday, we stayed at the very lovely Beaufort Guest House on Cathedral Road.

On Sunday morning, we set out to explore the family sites in Cardiff. Here, my mom stands in front of her grandfather's home on Wordsworth Avenue.

Tredegarville Baptist Church is the parish to which my great-grandparents belonged before they left Wales for the States.

My great grandmother wrote fondly of Mumbles light house, so a journey to there & Swansea on Sunday was in order.

My mother and sister pose in front of the Mumbles light house at the Mumbles Pier.

The Mumbles Pier is an odd collection of buildings and sights, including these railings that moan loudly in the stiff Welsh winds.

After leaving Mumbles, we searched for family sites in Llanelli. By chance, we stumbled upon the Zion Baptist, the church of my great-great-grandpa.

In Kidwelly, the town in which my great grandfather was born, we came upon the very cool St. Mary's Church.

Incredible old stonework on St. Mary's Church.

Mom checks out the entrance to the church that looms over the center of town.

Lady Street in Kidwelly is the street on which my great-grandfater (and namesake) was born.

The city's symbol, what I like to call the Kidwelly Kitty.

My great-grandfather always said that he was born in the shadow of Kidwelly Castle. We were pleased to find out that this was essentially true.

The squat backside of Kidwelly Castle.

A low fall sun setting on Kidwelly Castle.

Back in Cardiff, we spent Monday morning strolling Bute Park, City Hall, and the University. Cardiff Castle rises above fall colors in the distance.

Fall was wrapping up in Bute Park.

The red dragon, the symbol of Wales, graces a light post near Cardiff City Hall.

The clock tower on Cardiff City Hall.

Statues abound in Cardiff, as in most larger European cities. This handsome bronze marks the war in Africa.

The Cardiff World War I Memorial.

After strolling Cardiff on Monday morning, we headed to eastern Wales to visit one of Steph's favorite places, Tintern Abbey.

Steph in one of the entrances to the abbey ruins.

The abbey is a truly amazing ruin.

More Tintern...

...and even more.

After a visit to Chepstow and a long, wandering drive through the countryside, we found Kingcoed, the home of my great-great-grandmother.

The small baptist church in Kingcoed.

Another church in Llandenny, one of the places of my people.
